Cape Tribulation and Daintree Rainforest

Cape
Tribulation, Far North Queensland
Where the rain forest meets the reef. To merely say this place
is beautiful is an understatement, an injustice to the Cape Tribulation
and all its friends and relatives.
There is a special tranquility about the Daintree that pictures
and words cannot describe. You have to spend a little time in the
Daintree to fully appreciate its magical appeal.
Cape Trib
Cape Tribulation ('Cape Trib') and the Daintree Coast is not on
the power grid so you have to BYO (just kidding).
This mean most residents have their own power generators (Jenny)
often running off of alternative forms of energy such as solar power.
This all adds to the sense of a community. Many of the locals
are against large-scale development. Once you have visited –
you will be too.
Best of both worlds on the Daintree Coast. A two day tour
that takes in the best of the region.

The Cassowary or ‘Big Chook’
Cassowary,
what you looking at? I live here!
Cassowaries are indeed very large ‘chooks’ up to 2m
tall and weighing as heavy as 60kg and they should be treated with
respect and caution should you be fortunate enough to see one in
the wild.
In Australia, sadly, Cassowaries can only be found running free
in the Cape York Peninsula, Cooktown and Paluma. There is a caged
one in Darling Harbour in Sydney
but that’s another story.
Cassowaries and the Rainforest
Cassowaries play an important role in dispersing rainforest fruit
seeds. At least 20 different rainforest seeds will only germinate
after they have been through the cassowary’s gut. Without
the Cassowary the rainforest would be a different place.
Cassowaries have a sharp ‘dagger claw’ in the middle
of their three toes and may strike out with it if they are under
attack or feel threaten. So be nice.
Nobody really knows what the horn or ‘casque’ on their
head is used for but it looks impressive.
With just over thousand Aussie Cassowaries left it is very important
that you don’t run one over. Slow down and drive carefully
where you see the Cassowary sign.
In any event, your best chance of seeing a Cassowary is on a walking
track in the Daintree Rainforest or near Mission Beach – not
from the wheel of your car.

Horse Power, Ride Your Way Through The Rainforest
Daintree Horse Power
Now I do not like horses. This was something I did after much angst.
I really do not like horses and they aren’t too impressed
with me either.
I knew my horse had it in for me and I was right. It snorted, tried
to bite me and finally trod on my foot. Guess what - this was one
of the best things I've ever done.
Truly memorable, gorgeous, peaceful and exciting all at once. Go
for it (just watch where you put your feet)
