Top 60 Things To Do In Queensland

51 (12) Port Douglas

Port Douglas is where the luxury meets the reef. A mere 67 kilometres north of Cairns. Port Douglas is easy to get to but harder to leave.

Named after John Douglas an ex Queensland Premier Port Douglas competes with Cairns as the most important centre in Far Northern Queensland. Cairns has the Airport whilst Port Douglas has the resorts.

Port Douglas last outshone Cairns in the early 1900s with gold fever. I failed to find any but I'm sure a few of Port Douglas's visitors have had more success.

With the Sheraton Mirage Hotel, palm trees, manicured lawns, 'condominiums' (expensive units /flats some with security staff - tough gig), private golf courses, lavish tennis courts, ridiculously expensive restaurants and over priced, 'fashionable' arcades Port Douglas has become a little surreal. Port Douglas's attraction owes much to the people it attracts.

So, if you do nothing else, grab yourself an overpriced coffee and see if you spot a rich thing doing a rich thing. You might even spot a celebrity (wasn't that Russel Crowe beating up the waiter..)

In and around Port Douglas
Lookout from Flagstaff Hill

Flagstaff Hill Lookout (Locally known as 'The Lookout') gives you a nice view over Four Mile Beach and the Coral Sea.
Turn right at the end of the main street and follow the signs.

Four Mile Beach

White sand at Four Mile Beach make it one of the most attractive beaches in the area

Port Douglas Sunday Markets

Cotters Market by the Sea. Held every Sunday at Anzac Park from early in the morning and starts to close at mid-day.

Port Douglas Courthouse

Wharf St this is the only ‘old’ (by Australian standards) building dating back to the goldrush in 1879.

The Rainforest Habitat

Probably a sign of things to come. You’ll find The Rainforest Habitat is artificial rainforest environment close to the real Daintree Rainforest habitat.

It is a lot more efficient to have all the wildlife in one spot. The Habitat does not just cover Rainforest so it could save you quite a bit of travel time..hmmm.

Port Douglas Tropical Fruits Winery

On my hit list next time I’m here - Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery.

Saint Mary's by the Sea.

Find me somebody to love with bags of money and this could be where you end up. Beautiful little Church with nice views out to sea.

Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas
Great Barrier ReefSnorkeling Great Barrier Reef

58 (55) Sea Kayak Adventure - Noosa Everglades - 1 Day

Noosa EvergladesNoosa Everglades

Best explored by canoe or kayak, the tannin-coloured waters of the river offer the most outstanding reflections of the paperbarks, bloodwoods and cotton trees that overhang from the banks.

The river winds its way south behind the massive sand dunes of the North Shore that protect this natural wonder from the power of the Pacific Ocean.

The Sunshine Coast has a multitude of diverse and protected waterways that are ideal for the ultimate sea kayak adventure. Located a comfortable one-hour’s drive North of Brisbane, the region boasts home to many spectacular marine and bird species that inhabit the coastal waters and foreshores.

Wildlife flourishes in this region of the river, freshwater Australian Bass use the submerged logs as cover, goannas patrol the banks, and the bird life is stunning.

Many locations along the rivers edge have cultural significance and were used by the aboriginal people for ceremony and were sites of the first Timber Mills in the region.

This trip will have you mystified at every bend, and the calm waters are perfect for paddlers of all levels.

59 (99) Australia Zoo – Steve Urwin fame RIP

As well as the expected crocs the Australia Zoo is well stocked with animals including Bettong Camels, Cheetahs, Dingoes, Echidnas, Elephants, Foxes, Kangaroos, Koalas, Otters, Possums and Gliders, Tasmanian Devils, Tigers and Wombats

Somewhat different to a more traditional zoo the Australia Zoo has ‘wildlife action every day and move at a great rate of knots to bring you the most action-packed LIVE shows and exciting encounters with [their] amazing animals’.

Ticket prices reflect the show nature of the Australia Zoo at around fifty bucks for a ticket. None the less if you get bored easily this could change your view of what a zoo should be like. Or maybe its more of a circus. You tell me.

Opening Hours 9am - 4:30pm

You’ll find the Australia Zoo is about a two hour drive from the Gold Coast at Beerwah.

60 (52) Skydiving Noosa

You have to do one a crazy thing whilst on holiday. May as well go for the big one, just don’t tell your mum until afterwards.

Skydiving NoosaSkydiving Noosa
Noosa - Tandem Skydiving on the Beach

Come fly with me, come jump and skydive away and see the whole of the Sunshine Coast very quickly.

From Noosa right down to Caloundra and Bribie Island, you get to see it all (but you will have to open your eyes of course) from a sensational perspective.

The ride to altitude is quick and smooth - the views are fantastic from 14,000 ft. Jumping out of the plane will completely grab you. The freefall is fast and incredible; the parachute ride is quiet, re-assuring and peaceful.

Finish this ultimate experience by landing on the beautiful beach at Coolum - right in the middle of the Sunshine Coast. This is simply the best place to skydive.

But it's not over after we land! It's back to our office at the Coolum Beach Hotel just 2 minutes away. Grab a cold drink from the bar while the DVDs are processed, get your First Jump Certificate, T-shirt and other goodies and then relax by watching your jump on the big screen.

You'll be leaving us with the biggest smile on your face and will have the rest of the Coast to play in.

All jumps are videoed so if you like it then you can decide to buy - and relive your jump anytime you like! Your instructor carries the videos while you jump and it's all about you.

They record everything you say and do! It's a DVD mini-movie of your whole skydiving experience. You can even purchase still digital photos of your jump, burnt onto a CD while you wait and e-mail images to your friends!

Tandem skydiving onto the beach at Coolum is simple and easy and is a MUST DO activity while you are on holidays on the fabulous Sunshine Coast. You will have extreme fun. You won't regret it, guaranteed!
