are indeed very large ‘chooks’ up to 2m tall and weighing
as heavy as 60kg.
In Australia,
sadly, Cassowaries can only be found running free in the Cape York
Peninsula, Cooktown and Paluma. There is a caged one in Darling
Harbour in Sydney
but that’s another story.
With just over
thousand Aussie Cassowaries left it is very important that you don’t
run one over. Slow down and drive carefully where you see the Cassowary
sign.

James Cook passed through Whitsunday passage On Sunday 4 June which
happened to be Whit Sunday (the seventh Sunday after Easter). He
had said 'my god this place is gorgeous' but the name was never
officially adopted :-)
